Darin: Brief von John C. Eccles von John Curtin School of Medical Research an Adrien Albert an Australian National University, 16.12.1953 [Brief]

Bemerkung: Correspondece of personal and institutional character, with some reference to ongoing research work. 18.12.46 "Brooks and I are 'flat out' on the synapse and the spinal cord [...] The electrical theory is a strong favourite in the central nervous system"The letters of the years 1950 and 1951, contain many references to the founding and scientific organisation of the Medical School of the Australian National University, the first research university in Australia (founded 1946). Albert (Head of Medical Chemistry) and Eccles (Head of Physiology) debate on the subdivision and hierarchy of the departments, i.e. whether it would be preferable to devote a full chair to Pharmacology (closer to Chemistry) or to Biophysics (closer to Physiology). The discussion is triggered by the possibility of hiring Bernhard Katz but he would not accept less than a professorship. Issues raised are the epistemological and medical value of the two disciplines and the mission of a research university.2.10.51 "I am beginning to think that chemical specificity plays a more important role in the central nervous system than I would have admitted hitherto"
