Bemerkung:   letters from the mid-1940s relate to JCE's visit to Chicago and to Gerard's visit to Australia and New Zealand, both in 1945.   Reference to Gerard's lab work on the neuromuscular junction (especially on single muscle fibre membrane potential).  08.11.45 Gerard remarks "I cannot see how the experiments that you and Kuffler did in Australia can be interpreted in any way except strongly favouring an electrical transmittor at the neural-myal junction"  04.10.48 reports on recent work in his department on single muscle fibre membrane potential, with confusing results. He is also working on a perfused spinal cord preparation, which "gives promise of great things when we really get it under control"  29.03.50 on ups and down in research, "the major down being the unexpected and unsolved difficulties with the perfused cord preparation". The work on single muscle fibre potentials is going very well and they are coming up with a "completely new interpretation of ion balance and potentials for the muscle fiber".  Gerard is about to publish his "last word on acetylcholine" soon
