In Ergebnisse der Physiologie, Biologischen Chemie und Experimentellen Pharmakologie 51 (1961), 299-430 [1A-194]Prof. Eccles sent Prof. Schaefer a copy of an article he had written in the journal Ergebnisse der Physiologie. Schaefer wanted Eccles to visit Heidelberg before or after the congress in Leiden. Schaefer inquired about Dr. Robert Schmidt, his former employee, who then worked for Eccles in Canberra. Eccles told him, that Dr. Schmidt is making good progress. Schaefer informed Eccles about a society he had started to discuss the situation in natural sciences with theologians. At that time just catholic scientists were involved but he hoped to include all christian theologians. Eccles spoke about his interests and wished to become a corresponding member of that society.Eccles, John C.: The mechanism of synaptic transmission. In Mario Bunge (ed.): The critical approach to science and philosophy: Essays in honour of Karl Popper (Free Press of Clencoe Collier-Macmillan, London 1964), 266-279 [1A-257] "It is, as yet, bu a tentative beginning of the theme of experience, but I hope to find time to write a book. [...] When my time as an experimentalist is up and if I have sufficient grey matter left I will then make this effort.[...]"

Bemerkung: Looking forward to discussion at a conference in Leiden, incl. philosophical and societal issues; interested in membership of a learned society for scientists and theologists; European vs Australian discussions and culture."I was very happy to know of your interest in philosophical problems because I, too, have been attracted in this direction. In fact, I would say that my original interest in neurophysiology stemmed from my interest in philosophy in my teen-age period. I was good to hear that you had started a society to discuss the natural sciences with the theologians. There is certainly a very great need for such developments if we are to keep alive the spiritual outlook of Man that is essential if we are not to lapse into technological barbarism. In Australia it would be far too premature to start anything like this [...]"
