Sohn des Gleichnamigen (1685-1767) u. der Dorothea Linder (1685-1754); 1734 stud. phil. (5.6.1736 b.a., 3.6.1738 m.a.) u. 1737 stud. med. (24.5.1742 cand. med., 8.7.1748 dr. med.) in Basel, im Sept. 1745 Antritt einer Bildungsreise via Marburg, Halle, Jena, Leipzig nach Berlin, 1746 Student in Göttingen, Ende 1747 in Paris, 1748 Rückkehr nach Basel, im selben Jahr Prof. d. Mathematik, tauschte die Professur nach ca. einem Monat mit J. Bernoulli II gegen den Lehrstuhl der Eloquenz, 1753 botan. Reise durch die Schweiz, 1755 Reise nach Holland, England u. Frankreich, Rückkehr erst 1757, 1761/62 Rektor d. Uni Basel, auch als praktischer Arzt tätig
